Quick and Easy Halloween Pennant Banner

I LOVE Halloween! I love it so much that I usually put up my indoor Halloween decorations in August. I figure I spend so much time making and getting them out for display I might as well enjoy them for a while! Here is my first Halloween project of the season, a quick, inexpensive yet very festive Halloween pennant banner.

One of my favorite places for inexpensive holiday decorations is the Dollar Tree and this year it hasn’t disappointed! I found several items including a wood yard sign, a tinsel spider web and these felt stickers.

To make this banner you will need:

Felt stickers

Felt sheets in black, purple, yellow, green and orange

Ribbon

Black embroidery thread and needle

Scissors

Pen

Optional-hole punch

I started by making a paper template of my flag and them making one a bit larger for the black background. Cut smaller flags from purple, yellow, green and orange felt and larger flags from the black felt.

Then stitch colored flags to the center of a black flag and attach a sticker to the center. I used a small hole punch to make a hole in the corner of my flags but you could also make a small snip with your scissors. Run the ribbon through and done!

Oh Mr. Rabbit...

I have been in a bit of a felt frenzy lately and I love it! Today, I wanted to share my latest art piece which is a tribute to the amazing Mary Blair. Here is my version of her White Rabbit from the book Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland. It is such a beautifully illustrated book I highly recommend it for children or Disney fans such as myself.

This is a 5"x 7" Knoppang IKEA frame with a matted area of 4"x 6".  The image is made entirely of felt (no glue) and hand stitched with DMC embroidery floss. It was all hand cut and sewn by myself.  I took several in process pictures so as you scroll down you can see it all take shape. The first picture of the tiny black felt piece in my hand is to give you an idea of the size of some of the pieces I was working with.  I believe that was the nose, before I trimmed it!

Winnie the Pooh Felt Art

Lots of projects going on lately, but I am particularly excited about having finished this little guy; the always adorable Winnie the Pooh!

This is another one of my felt art pieces measuring 9.5x7.5 inches. It is made entirely of felt and embroidery thread, no glue is used at all and I stitch and cut everything by hand. We are big Disney fans, as in we go there about once a week, and one of my favorite attractions is The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. (That ride along with The Haunted Mansion made me decide to pursue a degree in scenic design and become the artist that I am today) If you have rode the ride it as many times as I have, you may have noticed as you go into Owl’s house there are pictures all around. Off the lower right is the cutest picture of Winnie the Pooh and that is what I wanted to recreate in felt.

I love that picture! My awesome husband was quick with the camera and able to snag a picture of it so I could show you just how cute it is. Originally, I was going to just paint said picture but then I stumbled upon an oval frame in a thrift store. While it’s not the prettiest frame it had a certain charm to it and I knew right away what I would use it for. Here are a few in-process pictures so you can see how it took shape.

 I also remembered to photograph the back before I framed it. I usually get so wrapped up in finishing it I forget but the back really shows how much work went into a piece. 

I have been asked if my felt art is for sale, unfortunately if an image is copyrighted/trademarked it is illegal to sell fan art based on it with out permission. Someday I hope to be part of Disney's fine art program so that I can share my love of felt art. Kuchi Kopi Wrist Pincushion

I finally made myself a new and fun version of one my most used sewing tools. Check out my Kuchi Kopi wrist pincushion!

As you already know I am a big fan of the show Bob's Burgers so I thought Kuchi Kopi would make a great pincushion. I had this awesome slap bracelet stylus from Bento Box Entertainment so I thought why not combine the two for something adorable and useful. I may just wear it as a cute plush bracelet when I'm not sewing!

The Making of My Linda Belcher Felt Photo

For those of you that read my blog I have a special preview and behind the scenes look at my latest feltie creation. My Bob's Burgers fan art felt photo of Linda!

 This is a 6"x8" hand cut and stitched felt photo made by me, Rae, and then framed in an 8"x10" frame. 

I love to paint as well as sew and this was an idea I had been toying around with for a while of combining the two to make photo like felties instead of just free standing felt ornaments. I think of this as painting but with felt and thread.  Also I don't use glue at all, I sew everything by hand. I actually considered this image of Linda initially when I was making the individual Belcher family felties because it was so funny, but it just didn't go with that particular idea I had of family portraits in felt. So after completing the others I decided I had to give this a try because I couldn't stop thinking about how funny it would be in felt form especially with the improvised plastic bag pants she wore! Below I am including some in process pictures for those of you who are interested in the creative process behind this piece.

This photo makes me laugh because to me she looks a bit like Lemongrab from Adventure Time, and you know what that means, Unacceptable!!! Better keep working.

This is where things really start to take shape. I just keep adding more and more detail.

I even made my own tiny bag for her pants! That was quite tedious but so worth it in the end.

A few more finishing touches and done! I hope you enjoyed seeing the photos as much as I enjoyed making this and sharing it with you. To be clear I am not affiliated with Fox or Bob's Burgers in any way, (although a girl can dream right lol)?! I am just a huge fan, it is a great show and John Roberts who provides the voice for Linda completely makes the character come to life, hilarious!

Feltie Making Tutorial

If you follow me on social media you know that I make lots of felt items. For those of you who have asked how I make them this tutorial is for you! Here is a picture of my feltie making supplies and I am going to go through each one so you can create your own felt masterpieces!

First draw your felt image. Nothing special just pen and paper is fine, then cut it out.

Now trace the image on to your felt. 

I use a white Gelly Roll pen or a regular ball point pen.

 For me the secret to making felties is having a great pair of scissors. I use these:

 

They are 4 inch Gingher Knife Edge Sewing scissors and are perfect for cutting felt. They are small which make it easy to cut intricate shapes and sharp so you get nice clean edges. They are a bit pricey, $30 at Joann Fabrics but they are wonderful and last very well.  I have been using these for several years and they are still like new, but I don’t cut paper with them only fabric or felt. Cutting paper with your good scissors is a no no! Don’t do it.

I use embroidery thread to sew my felt pieces. If you have never used embroidery thread it is made up of 6 strands which you separate into how ever many you want to sew with.  I pull out 2 strands to sew with and just hold or pin the piece in place and stitch it.

Linda Belcher Feltie

My submission for this weeks fan art Fridays. On of my favorite moms Linda Belcher, Alriiight!! I think I quote Linda more than any other Belcher family member. Its almost Christmas and I have yet to stop singing her Thanksgiving song. That voice of hers, I love it!!! John Roberts is one funny guy, its not just the way he does her voice but the enthusiasm behind it is perfect! They could not have chosen a better person to bring Linda to life. To all of the Linda feltie fans out there "Thank you for loving me!"

Gene Belcher "holiday" Feltie

Busy week but I do have a new tutorial on the way! In the mean time here is my submission for this weeks fan art Fridays.  @BobsBurgersFOX threw a curve ball and asked for holiday fan art so I quickly added a Santa hat to my Gene Belcher feltie lol! I love this show!
